🌿 Find Your Hideaway: How to Create a Hyggekrog

Every home has (or needs!) a Hyggekrog — a quiet little corner where the world can’t find you. The Danish call it a cosy nook, but it's more than just a seat or a space. It’s a feeling. A place to pause, breathe, and simply be.

Whether it’s a sun-drenched window seat, a favourite armchair, or a tucked-away bench in the garden, your Hyggekrog should be yours and yours alone. No rules. No perfection. Just comfort, warmth, and a little touch of joy.

Mine is at the bottom of our garden. It is a wooden bench swing that I recently painted a light grey on one fine summer’s day. It’s old and rusty now but I like to take a blanket out there and sit down and watch the garden. Sometimes I’m on my own, sometimes our dog Flynn will lie at the bottom of my feet. I’ll swing back and forth,  feel the breeze and listen to the bees. I might drink a cup of coffee or a glass of wine if it’s a nice evening.

What Makes a Hyggekrog?

A true Hyggekrog doesn’t have to be elaborate. In fact, the simpler, the better. All it really needs is:

  • A comfortable seat — this could be a window ledge with cushions, a squishy sofa corner, or a porch chair.
  • Soft textures — think plush cushions, a snuggly throw, or even a sheepskin rug.
  • Good lighting — soft lamps, fairy lights, or candlelight can transform a space instantly.
  • A little table — somewhere to rest your book, your cup of tea (or glass of wine), or a tiny plant.
  • A touch of you — maybe a favourite scent, a cherished photo, or a cosy soundtrack playing softly in the background.

We’d love to see your nooks — tag us @becosy.ie and inspire someone else to find their moment of calm.
